Spanish words that end with -o are masculine, and words that end with -a are feminine. There are exceptions - but knowing this rule will help you when using translation software.

Cognates are words that have similar pronunciations and spellings in both languages, and frequently have the same meaning. There are thousands of cognates shared by Spanish and English. Look in a Spanish-English dictionary and you'll find that many Spanish words beginning with E are cognates of English words: exterior (exterior), estado (state) and emplear (employ), to give a few examples.

Verbs

In the Spanish language there are two forms of the verb "to be" : estar, which means a relatively temporary state, and ser, which means a relatively permanent condition and which is also used before a predicate noun. Reflexive verbs often perform the same function in Spanish that passive verbs do in English. Because the inflection of the Spanish verb indicates person very clearly, subject pronouns are not necessary.

Inverted question mark and exclamation in Spanish

The Spanish language use of an inverted question mark (¿) at the beginning of a question and of an inverted exclamation point (¡) at the beginning of an exclamation.

Every question mark in Spanish must be opened and closed; an interrogative sentence or phrase begins with an inverted question mark, "¿" and end with the familiar question mark "?". (The same is true of exclamation marks.)
