language of Puerto Rico and is close to becoming the official language in
countries such as Canada, Morocco, the Philippines and in the United States
many inhabitants are fluent in this language. It is estimated that Spanish
is spoken by up to 200 million people across the globe. Spanish originated
in the southwest Europe from the Latin dialect. The Spanish vocabulary predominantly
consists of words from the Latin language. Owing to the fact that Spanish
speaking people were spread in many parts of the world the language soon
adopted words from other languages such as Arabic, English, French and Italian.
Spanish is the most widely spoken and studied descendant of the Latin languages.
Two major dialects observed in Spanish language, Andalusian and Castilian.
A difference is observed in the two dialects in the pronunciation of the
combination of letters ce, ze, and za. The Castilian speakers sound out the
letter combinations with a th sound, whereas the Andalusian assert the above
combinations with an s sound. In the United States you will find different
dialects, in the southwest you will find Mexican Spanish, Puerto Rician,
Cuban and many others. ( Learn more about Spanish

follow a single linguistic system and a common descriptive linguistics. The
Spanish vocabulary, pronunciation and expressions may slightly differ from
people living in various parts of Spain or even the world, but these variations
have never caused too much of a communication gap.
Spanish is known to closely be related to several other West Iberian languages
that have descended from the Latin language. It is gladly observed that most
are easily understood by the speakers of one or other kind. Spanish and Italian
are sometimes referred to as sister languages because they follow a highly
similar phonemic system. There is not even much difference in vocabulary,
grammar or syllable structure. The lexical sameness between Spanish and Italian
is known to be around 82%.
As a descendant of Latin dialect it naturally uses Latin alphabets, with
an inclusion of ñ. Throughout history ch and ll were recognized as single
letters, they had their own place in the alphabetical order. 1994 onwards,
these twin letters have been substituted with proper letter pairs.
Spanish language is comparatively an inflected language. It has around fifty
conjugated forms per verb and follows the most common two gender system.
But Spanish has a smaller noun declension and a limited pronominal declension.
The Spanish sentence structure is one where the agent comes first, the verb
second and the object third. This system is also known as the Subject-Verb-Object
syntax, but variations may occur. Spanish language is known to be right branching
as it generally places nouns before adjectives and it also uses prepositions.
Spanish language allows the excision of pronouns when practically found to
be unnecessary.
The pronunciation of any Spanish word can be easily guessed with one glance
at the spelling. But phonemic stress is where one may be confused. Spanish
follows a system of phonemic stress which implies that by a minor change
of phonemic stress in a single word it can mean two different things. Thus
a new learner has to be very careful as to the stress of each word. Spanish
is also called a syllable-timed language, as every syllable is believed to
take approximately the same time measure, though there might be a difference
owing to the situation.
