Interrogatory Pronouns
Spanish interrogatory pronouns are used exclusively in queries. Similar to the English language, they are placed at the beginning of a sentence and only prepositions can be placed before them.
Interrogatory pronouns always pose a difficulty for Spanish beginners. Like, qué and cuál form such a pair of interrogatory pronouns that confuse people as they both are often translated to similar words in English, what and which.
- En qué piensas? - What are you thinking about?
- Cuál es tu problema? - What is your problem?
- Qué libro leíste? - Which book did you read?
- Cuál prefieres? - Which one do you prefer?
Whereas, Como sometimes means how, and sometimes it refers to how come and why.
- Cómo no lo sabes? - Why don't you know?
- Como lo haces? - How do you do it?
For the formation of queries the commonly used Spanish Interrogatory Pronouns are:
- Qué - What
- Quién - Who
- Quienes - Whom
- Cuándo - When
- Dónde - Where
- Cuánto - How much
- Cómo - How
- Por qué- Why
- Cuales – Which (plural)
- Cuál – Which (singular)

- Qué estás haciendo? - What are you doing?
- Qué es esto? - What is this?
- Quién está contigo? - Who is with you?
- Quién es? - Who is it?
- A quiénes debemos emplear? - Whom (all) should we hire?
- Cuándo vamos a Madrid? - When do we go to Madrid?
- Hasta cuando quedan ustedes? - Until when are you staying?
- Cuánto has visto? - How much have you seen?
- Cuanto hay? - How much is there?
- Cómo quieres viajar? - How do you want to travel?
- Cómo lo haces? - How do you do it?
- Por qué estamos tan solos? - Why are we so alone?
- De qué hablas? - What are you talking about?
- Para qué estudiaba espanol - Why did you study Spanish
- Cuál quieres compar? - Which one do you want to buy?
- Cuáles prefieres? - Which ones do you like?
- Cuál es su nacionalidad? - What is her nationaliity?
- Adónde vas? - Where are you going to?
- Dónde estó tu perro? - Where is your dog?
