Translation Dictionaries and Homographs

When building your dictionary be sure to put the identifier with the word to help the software determine the part of speech. For example, if you were to add the word "wind", be sure to put in "the wind" and "a wind", this way the software knows that should be treated as a noun.  Also at the same time add "to wind" and "wind up"  Below is a list of common homographs.

Homographs are English words that have the same spelling but different pronunciation.

Examples

  • bow, the front part of a ship
  • bow, to bend
  • bow, a decorative knot

 Homophones

Two words that are pronounced alike, but not necessarily spelled alike, are called homophones: "rain" and "reign," for instance, are homophones.

Homonyms

Homonyms are two or more words that have the same sound and often the same spelling but differ in meaning, such as bank (embankment) and bank (place where money is kept).

Spanish Verbs

In the Spanish language there are two forms of the verb "to be" : estar, which means a relatively temporary state, and ser, which means a relatively permanent condition and which is also used before a predicate noun. Reflexive verbs often perform the same function in Spanish that passive verbs do in English. Because the inflection of the Spanish verb indicates person very clearly, subject pronouns are not necessary.

Inverted question mark  and exclamation in Spanish

The Spanish language use of an inverted question mark (¿) at the beginning of a question and of an inverted exclamation point (¡) at the beginning of an exclamation.

Every question mark  in Spanish must be opened and closed; an interrogative sentence or phrase begins with an inverted question mark, "¿" and end with the familiar question mark "?". (The same is true of exclamation marks.)

The Different English and Spanish Dialects

English Dialect:
Even though English may be your native language there are different English Dialects. For example if you read a British newspaper you will find words that are slightly different but you still recognize the word. For example, colour and color, cheque and check. Systran uses American English for the translation.

Spanish Dialects:
There are a number of Spanish dialects. The accepted Standard Dialect for Spanish to English Translation is Castilian. Systran uses this Spanish standard dialect for the Spanish to English  translation.

There are several important differences in pronunciation between Castilian and major dialects of Latin American Spanish. In the former, c before e and i, and z before a, o, and u, are pronounced th, as in English think ; in the latter, they are sounded as s in English see.

Also the alphabetical symbol ll in Castilian is pronounced as lli in English billion ; but in Latin American Spanish, as y in English you. Overall the differences between the Spanish dialects of Europe and of Latin America with reference to pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar are relatively minor so if you translate Spanish to English with the software usually a person that speaks Spanish or English can understand the minor differences.
